The recent news of Bing and Google indexing Tweets sends a chill up my spine. No, please tell me it isn’t so! There is a term we have used in the I.T. field for decades “Garbage In Garbage Out” and that is exactly what is going to happen with the search results. People go to a search engine to find information, products and services. How do tweets fit into the mix? They don’t …
Maybe they should develop a social media search utility and house Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. there and leave the search engine results alone. Believe it or not, some of us are too busy to care whether George took his dog for a walk or Paris Hilton got a manicure.
This is search engine result page littering at its finest!
This could create a HUGE opportunity for local and vertical directories. If people can’t find what they are looking for easily on Google, Yahoo, Bing … they will start going elsewhere.
The Internet is a baby and you never know what will be the next BIG idea. A mere 10 years ago no one knew what Google was (well a few of us did) and it spread via traditional and digital word of mouth (or as Seth Godin says, the sneeze).

When I read about all of this, over the past several days, my reaction was “do they have nothing better to do than chase the reflection of each others mediocrity”? After as little reflection of my own…..I think I was only partly on track. There is some pretty potentially serious data mining juice at stake and neither Microsoft nor Google is apt (or even able at this late date) to leave that prospect lying around for the other to scoop up. It may all be for naught but they cannot escape each others orbit long enough to innovate. The good news is that others are not so encumbered.
